Where is it

Everybody knows the Bund for its fascinating views and fancy bars, but few know that there are some good meat hidden behind. Right by Shanghai's river strip and lined with glamorous bars and restaurants, a low-key laid-back venue behind the heritage buildings serves some of the best meat in town.

Conveniently located in the Bund area embracing Huangpu River and fascinating Pudong skyline, Khans Mongolian Bistro is like a supplement eatery where tourists get to pop by for a sumptuous meat feast.

What does the boss say

Owner Zhao Yao, an inner Mongolian original, says his "mission" is to bring some of the most authentic tastes from the vast grasslands in his hometown to the metropolis of Shanghai.

"And I don't want to replicate the traditional decoration that one finds in the region," says Zhao. "We are creating an urban restaurant in the Bund area where elegant meets tradition. Obviously one can find some Mongolian touches as I display a few antique pieces from my personal collections."

Ambiance

The restaurant sports a casual and relaxed atmosphere. The first floor features expansive French windows and wood decorations, exuding a cozy vibe. The second floor is more intimate in interior where some of his personal collections are on display, allowing a peak into the Mongolian culture.

Food & Drinks

Milk tea is the first impression most people have on this mysterious region. Why not start your meal with milk tea like locals do? Served warm in a big beautiful brass pot (158 yuan/four pax), the milk tea is made with famed Chinese Pu'er tea, hand-made yogurt cream, beef jerky and fried millet, strong and milky.

High in protein, traditional Mongolian food - lamb and beef in particular, are all imported from the region. With simple seasonings, Roasted Mongolian Grassland Lamb Ribs (RMB158/small portion; RMB298/big portion) sees a magic combination of golden crisp skin and tender juicy meat. The staffs here are very helpful as they help slice the meat from bones into smaller pieces. Grabbing with hands is strongly recommended as it is the most authentic way of eating.

Using the beef breed that's been herded for centuries in Inner Mongolia, grassland cattle beef is one of our favorites. Flavorful without being overly fat, the marbled meat is especially chewy and tender.

Never leave Khans without trying their Mongolian Beef Pot Sticker (RMB58). Filled with a savory beef filling, the impressive Mongolian "taco" is probably why you should visit Khans again. Satisfying with amazing food, this is definitely a restaurant of must-try on your list for a quality taste of Inner Mongolia!
